Truck Fuel Economy: Tire Pressure, Alignment and Maintenance

Fuel use in a commercial truck depends on its load, route, speed, weather, idling and condition. There is no single adjustment that guarantees better fuel economy. Tire pressure is a practical place to start, and unusual tire wear or pulling may point to an alignment issue.

Start With Tire Pressure

Underinflated tires can increase rolling resistance and heat. Check pressures using the vehicle and tire manufacturers’ guidance for the tire specification and axle load. Record readings so changes are easier to spot, especially when temperatures or loads change. Natural Resources Canada’s freight guidance also identifies proper tire inflation as one of several ways to manage fuel use.

Our Picture Butte tire team can inspect tire condition and help you review the correct fitment and inflation guidance. A pressure check is worthwhile for safety and tire life as well as efficiency; the fuel effect will vary by truck and operating conditions.

Assess Alignment When Symptoms Appear

Uneven tire wear, a pull to one side or an off-centre steering wheel can signal a need for an alignment assessment. Worn steering or suspension parts can also affect how the truck tracks, so the cause should be checked before an adjustment is recommended. Alignment is one maintenance factor, alongside driving conditions and other vehicle systems.

Follow the Truck’s Maintenance Schedule

Filters, fluid levels, leaks and other faults deserve attention when service is due or performance changes. The right work depends on the engine and the symptoms; replacing a part without diagnosing the issue may not improve fuel economy. Bring recent maintenance records and fuel-use observations when you book a truck service visit.

CVIP and Fuel-Economy Checks Serve Different Purposes

An Alberta CVIP inspection assesses applicable commercial vehicle safety requirements. It is not a fuel-economy diagnosis. If you have concerns about tire wear, dragging brakes or fuel use, tell us when booking so we can discuss a separate assessment.

Make a Practical Plan for Your Truck

If fuel use has changed, note when it began and whether the truck’s load, route, tires or driving conditions changed too. We can review the information, inspect concerns you identify and explain any recommended work before it begins.
